J, X, W , Q weeks

The writing these students are doing blows me away sometimes. To think we started the year not knowing what a sentence was, to thinking up and writing complete sentences. Sometimes two! They are incredible!

We had some fun with J week and used jelly beans for our measurement unit. We guessed how many it would take to measure an item, then measured it.

We had a 3-D shape hunt in out classroom. I would name a shape, and they had to see if they could find some in our room.  They were so proud of what they found!

In Science we are talking about living and non-living things. We filled out this chart together. It asks about all the things a living thing must have. It brought up some good discussions.

We are also working on maps. I thought it would be fun to start with the United States on Google map and then zoom way down to our city. Then we found our school and the kids wanted to see if they could find their house in our neighborhood. They loved it!

For 3-D shapes I wanted the kids to really look at the shapes and tell me what they noticed. So we looked at the sides, the types of lines, and corners. Then we thought about things in real life that are these shapes.

The kids created their own map of the places they go. They were encouraged to use lots of details!

Here the students are enjoying books on tape at a reading center.

For Earth Day we talked about ways we could help the earth. Then the students wrote about a way they thought they could make a difference.

We created cities using 2-D shapes. They added some great details to their artwork.

This is one of my favorite projects of the year. They have to think about something great about themselves. They write about what is great and why. Then we take a picture to put with their writing.

The jog-a-thon was a HUGE success. Thanks to everyone who helped out. We did some stretching before our big run and then they ran their hearts out! I was so proud.

We did an activity on team work and shapes. I would name a shape, then they had to work together and problem solve how they could make that shape with their bodies. It was interesting to see how the groups would do the shapes differently. We would talk about the similarities and differences. They had a good time.

We worked together as a class to look at the pictures and put them in order. Then we decided what sentence would describe the picture. We sounded out the words in each sentence.

The kids wrote about what they wished for in their journals. It was cute to see their wishes!

We used marshmallows and tooth picks to build shapes. We started with the 2-D shapes and worked up to the 3-D. It was fun to see their wheels spinning to build those shapes. We talked about how the toothpicks were the sides and the marshmallows were the corners.

Another part of out math unit on shapes is ways to make new shapes by putting shapes together. They had to build the shapes on their paper with the shape blocks. Then I had them look at the other ways people at their table did it. Just so they can see there are many right ways to do it.

The zoo field trip was a huge success. I have to thank all the volunteers for making it possible. A lot of the kids were so excited to ride the bus because most of them had not done that before!

At the zoo all the groups had so much fun exploring and seeing all the animals!

The giraffe slide was a huge hit!
