Letter N and M week with Thanksgiving

Letter N Week

We read the book The Napping House together in class. We then sequenced the events by putting the characters in order on the bed that they joined in the story. The kids did a great job.

We also talked about how name starts with N. We wrote how many letters in their name. Then we write it in number form, on a 10 frame, and with tally marks. They were excited to see whose name was long and whose was short.

In Social Studies we covered community helpers. We talked about what a community helper does and how  they help the community. We did an activity on out board where they had to name the community helper and then find the letter that it starts with. They really enjoyed it!

We also talked about maps. We looked at different maps and talked about how they were the same or different from each other. We talked about what a map shows us and what we might use them for. Then they got to draw a map of their neighborhood.

We did beginning, middle and ending of  a story. We read Don't Be Silly Mrs. Millie. It's about how she confuses her words like go hang up your goats instead of coats. The kids all laughed and enjoyed it. Then they drew and event from the beginning, the middle and the end of the book.

We worked on decomposing, or breaking apart, numbers from 6-10. We looked at the different ways to make each umber. We separated dominoes out by number and looked at the ways they made 6-10 on dominoes. Then they either drew the dots on the domino or wrote the numbers so they could see the different ways to make the numbers.

Letter M Week

We have been working on using our sounds to sounds out words. The kids each got a dry erase board and i would give them a word. They would see if they could hear the sounds in the word to spell it on the board. they did an amazing job. Some even wrote the breve above the vowel to show it was a short sound. Outstanding!

This was one of our journal entries. It said they have a number more than 2 on their 5 frame, what could it be? They figure out it could be 3, 4 or 5 and they drew it on their 5 frame. Great problem solving skills they have!

We read If You Take a Mouse To School together and they sequenced the events in the story.

This was an alphabet activity on our board of putting the letters in alphabetic order. Some would put what letter would come next, but others would pick a random letter and figure out where it belonged!

We did turkey writing for Thanksgiving! We started with a chart and brainstormed what turkeys are, have and can do. Then we took that chart and turned it into complete sentences. The kids worked so hard!

For turkey math they had to match the number to the correct number of dots and tally marks.

We also talked about more and less. We filled in the number of square it said, then we colored the box of the greatest number red and the less number blue. They did a fabulous job.

We talked about what is means to be thankful. Then the kids each brainstormed 3 things they were thankful for. I helped them spell the words, but they all wrote them on their turkey feathers.
