S week

Letter S Week

We started the week by talking about New Years resolutions. We talked about how its nice to make a goal for ourselves so we have something to work for. the one above wants to work on eating new vegetables. The one below says learn and the last one wants to learn to swim. The kids set some great goals for themselves.

We also made snowmen for S week. We used shaving cream and glue to make puffy snowmen. they turned out great. Then we read Snowmen at Night and the kids each wrote about what they thought their snowman would do at night. Then we put their writing with their art.

The picture below shows how puffy they turned out!

This student's snowman would work at night. The second one said build a snow house and the last one said  jump!

For a math center we used our math mats and solved math problems. They used the cars to figure out the math problem on their mat, then they wrote the problem and answer on a piece of paper. This is something you can do at home with your math mats as well!

After writing about their snowman at night they got to use the letter magnets to sound out words.

We started our wants versus needs Social Studies unit. They had to put things a person would need on an island into the boat. We had some great discussions about the difference between needing something and wanting something.

This was a problem we did in our math journal. A seal ate 2 fish, then he ate 4 more. This student used all the strategies to solve the problem!

I love to see how the students are using their letter sounds to sound out words in their writing and word study books! Here are some examples of the S words they thought of.

For centers, another activity we did was stamping and writing sight words. They loved using the stamps!

We also read a book this week called Sneezy the Snowman. It talks about how the snowman is cold and does things to warm up that make him melt. So in our journals we wrote... A snowman can not.... and they got to finish the sentence. These two say drink hot cocoa and touch  something hot.

For our math center the students pulled a card with a teen umber on it. Then they built a group of ten and how many more ones they needed to make that number.
