Letter F week and Letter R week

We had some wonderful firemen from the Meridian fire department come and give our class a talk about all the things they do. Below they are showing the kids the three layers on their jackets and how they keep them safe.

Here they are talking about the air tanks. They told them what they use them for and to not be scared if they hear the noises from the machines.

We did winter poems using our five senses. Then we learned about pointillism art and how it uses dots to create pictures. So we used that technique to make snowmen with our poems. They turned out wonderful!

For our Social Studies unit we are learning about wants and needs. They sorted the the items into wants and needs using our Promethean board.

For one of our math centers the students used dominoes for addition. They wrote how many dots on one side plus how many dots on the other side. Then the answer was how many dots all together!

They love using the iPads for centers. We have been working on dreambox, I hope you are continuing to use that online math resource at home!

I had the kids close their eyes and imagine they were at the grocery store. What kinds of things might they see that started with the Letter f? Here are the great things they came up with.

This was a class number line activity. I gave them each a number and they had to find where their number fit to make our number line go in order. It took some communication between them, but they got it figured out!

We worked on story order in class. I read a funny book about a teacher who always mixes up her words. Then the kids drew a picture from the beginning, middle and ending of the book.

This was another math station we worked on. The students were to use the number lines and the bears to solve the math problems. They are getting so much better at knowing which way to move depending on if it's addition or subtraction.

This center focused on hearing the beginning sounds in words. They had to glue the picture under the letter that the word started with.

It is so amazing to hear so many of the kids reading! They aren't afraid to sound out the words and try. It is such an incredible process to watch. I hope you are seeing it at home as well!

We wrote about something fun to do for letter F. The first one says it is fun to play play-doh. The second one says it is fun to be in school!

We read The Rainbow Fish in class. We talked about how it's a good quality to have to be nice to others. And that how people look doesn't make them a good or bad person. Then the kids made their own rainbow fish with one shiny scale since he shared them with his friends.

This activity was to hep the students see how a teen number is a group of ten and some more. We colored the groups of ten blue, and then how many more ones it needed in orange. It's a great activity for those visual learners.

We also talked about what it means to be responsible. I told them that even though they are kids, they still can be responsible. They thought up ways they can be responsible and wrote it in their journal. They came up with some great ways to be responsible.
