Presidents week and Letter C week

 Presidents Week

We have been working on counting the syllables in a word. Here the students are counting the syllables and putting the picture under the number of how many syllables the word has.

We talked about George Washington and how he was the first president of the Unites States. Here is the art project we did about him.

We also talked about Abraham Lincoln and how he helped end slavery as president. Their art of him turned out that great!

We had a group called Tears of Joy come and do a play for our school. It was based on 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. The kids loved it! They used puppets and props to tell the story and threw in some science facts as they went through their story. Below are some pictures from the play.

I had the students close their eyes and pretend that they were president. We discusses what kinds of things they would do as president. Then they each wrote out what they would do as president.

C Week

We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. The students then each made their own coconut tree with their name on the coconuts.

We have been working on some amazing things during our circle time that I thought I would share with you. This first one was the ways that we could make five. They talked with a buddy and then got to share what they thought. They then had to explain why it worked to make 5.

Here we were working on putting the numbers on the number line. Then we did some jumps and wrote a number sentence about what we did on the number line.

We also started finding mistakes in a sentence I wrote. All the red letters are mistakes I made that the students found themselves and corrected.

The students are getting more comfortable with their sounding out skills. Some kids are wanting to write the word instead of using pictures, which I was so excited about! Some chose to do some words and some pictures. And some only did pictures. All are a great way of hearing the c sound in the word.

We also wanted to step up our reading in out word study books. this was our first week so we did it together as a group. We talked about how we could add words to make the sentence more exciting. then we wrote the words into our sentences. Soon the will be able to do this independently as well!

Some students chose to add words in more than one part of the sentence!

Today we learned a rule about when to use K and when to use C. This shows how it depends what comes after. We thought up a lot of examples! But we also talked about how there are always some words that don't follow the rule, like kangaroo!

We read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. The kids quickly noticed that it had all our sight words this week! then the kids each thought up a descriptive word for a fish. They wrote their kind of fish and drew a picture. I am going to put them all together in a book as out own version of  Dr. Seuss' book.

We also used the book to do math today. They added how many red and how many blue they drew. They turned out great!

I wanted to thank everyone for doing a great job on the all about me posters. The kids all loved sharing them and listening to their classmates share. I think we learned something new about everyone in our room!

We also wrote a persuasive writing on cookies. I told them I was going to the store but was really torn on what kind to buy. They had two choices of what cookie I should get. They should try to persuade me to buy the kind they like. They had great reasons for the cookies they chose. Here are a few examples.
