L Week
Here we are doing a counting activity. We would pick the magic number and count around the circle. If the magic number landed on them the jumped up to say it. They had a lot of fun!
Here we are working on our L word sort. The students identify words that start with our letter of the week and cut them out to paste on their letter sheet. This is a great way to start on beginning letter sounds.
Here we are working in our word study books. We identify words that start with out letter of the week and they pick the words they like and write the word with the picture if possible.
This is an interactive activity on the fours seasons. The students labeled the trees with the correct season and put the clothes into the correct season. They had so much fun!
The activity reinforced our counting and number recognition by identify how many in the group and coloring it according to the key.
We always try to use our letter of the week in our journals. We also try to use our sight words. We work on a capital at the beginning, finger spacing between words, and punctuation at the end.
This lady bug activity started with our letter of the week and incorporated counting. They got to draw on the black dots, then had to count and write how many there were.
This activity in their math journals was picking a number of cubes, drawing how many there were, and writing the number they counted.
Letter O Week
Here are a few examples of making the letter O with our bodies!
This was another activity in our math journal. The students would give a number, we would draw that many and write the number underneath.
We did a counting search and find in our room. We started with one. A student showed me they found one magnet on our chart!
For two, a student showed me the 2 arrows on our weather chart.
Another student found 3 owls on our calendar.
One student showed me the four owls on the wall.
When we got to 5, a student showed me the five owls above the bulletin board. I was so impressed at all the different things they found around the room for each number. They worked so hard!
This was another count the objects and identify how many activity.
Our sight word books are one of my favorite activities of the week. it covers our letter of the week, but also includes many sight words for them to practice. It helps them gain confidence in their reading abilities. After they highlight all the letter of the week in their book they can color it. Then they get some time to read to a buddy in class. It's great to see their excitement when they read together! I hope they read them to you at home as well!
We made an octopus for our O art project. They got to use their counting skills to count out 8 legs. They also got to practice writing their letter O on the tentacles to look like the suction cups that we talked about.
We also made ocean art as well!
For Science we are working on the four seasons. We talked about what happens to the trees in each season.
Here is the O page in their word study books. They thought up some awesome words!
We are working on ways to make 5. They would put five blocks in the big box, then split them up into the smaller boxes. Then we had many discussions about all the combinations they came up with and if we think they all work. They kids had a lot to say which was wonderful! Look at all the wonderful combinations they came up with.
Below is another activity from our math journals. Their directions were to roll a die and build a tower that many blocks high. They did awesome.
The sheet above went with another decomposing activity we have been working on in class called missing partners. The first box shows they if you have four, it can be made with 1 and 3. We also like to play this game where we hold up some fingers, and put the rest behind our back to make that number. The kids love it.
This was our journal for O week. We used the sights words see, I, and the.
We have sight word songs that we listen to that help us learn how to spell our sight words. As we listen to them we practice writing them down.
G week
We made gumball machines for our G art project.
Below shows a decomposing three activity that we did. It helps the kids see the different combinations of how make three.
In Social Studies we talked about rules. We talked about rules we have, and if our parents have rules. After we thought up some examples we talked about why do we have them? They kids decided that rules and laws help keep us safe!
We used our 10 frames to help us see how many more to make five. We talked about how there were 5 boxes on top and on bottom. We would put a few blocks in the top row and then see how many more to make five. It helped them see visually without always have to count. They did an amazing job.
